Week of Aug. 31st -Welcome to Grade 2!

Welcome to our classroom blog! It has been a busy and exciting beginning as we get to know one another and begin building our classroom community.

From the Classroom

This week, students participated in activities designed to help us establish, practise, and follow our classroom routines. We also began reviewing:

  • Letter teams
  • Numbers to 100
  • Addition within 30

We will continue building on these skills as students become comfortable with our classroom routines and expectations.

Communication Books

Students have brought home a communication book. They will write in it each day to help support conversations at home about what they did and learned at school.

Wednesday Guest Teacher

On Wednesdays throughout September and October, I will be away from the classroom while I teach a course at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Education. During my absence, students will be working with Mrs. Coleen Wenc. Mrs. Wenc will already be familiar to many students, as she is an experienced and much-loved guest teacher here at MTS. I am very pleased that her consistent presence will allow students to continue learning with someone who knows our school community well. 

Library Books

Our weekly library visits will begin next Thursday. Students will bring home a new library book each Thursday and should return their previous book every Wednesday. Students are also welcome to bring a book from home to enjoy during quiet-reading times.

Daily Reminders

Please send your child to school each day with:

  • A labelled water bottle
  • Clothing appropriate for the weather

Thank you for helping us begin the year so positively. I am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning, growing, and belonging together!

 Week ending Sept. 25th  Grade 2 Weekly Update From the classroom : We had a busy week of learning in Grade 2! Literacy: We explored the er sound in words and reviewed ar/or/ore as word sounds. Students continued practicing how to write complete sentences with a subject and a predicate. To build reading skills, we played the decodable word game and cvc word game (pictured below) in class. *Please let me know if you would like a copy of these games for at home practice.  This week’s spelling words: at, be, this, have, from, or, one, had, by, word.  Week of Sept. 11th  From the Classroom Optional UFLI Home Practice As part of our classroom phonics program, families may choose to complete this optional practice at home. A few minutes of relaxed practice can help reinforce the phonics skills and words introduced at school. We will begin weekly spelling tests on Monday . The spelling words are listed at the bottom of the practice page. 1. Practise the New Sound This week’s sound is ar , as in car . Ask your child to say the sound /ar/ . Have your child read the sample words. If needed, encourage your child to say each sound and blend the sounds together. 2. Complete the Word Chains Your child can build the words with letter tiles or write them on paper or a whiteboard. Read each direction aloud and have your child change only the letter or letters needed to make the next word. After each change, ask your child to read the new word aloud. 3.
