Week of Sept. 11th

From the Classroom

Optional UFLI Home Practice

As part of our classroom phonics program, families may choose to complete this optional practice at home. A few minutes of relaxed practice can help reinforce the phonics skills and words introduced at school.

We will begin weekly spelling tests on Monday. The spelling words are listed at the bottom of the practice page.

1. Practise the New Sound

This week’s sound is ar, as in car.

  • Ask your child to say the sound /ar/.
  • Have your child read the sample words.
  • If needed, encourage your child to say each sound and blend the sounds together.

2. Complete the Word Chains

Your child can build the words with letter tiles or write them on paper or a whiteboard. Read each direction aloud and have your child change only the letter or letters needed to make the next word.

After each change, ask your child to read the new word aloud.

3. Practise the Irregular Word

Ask your child to read, spell, and write the irregular word pretty. Talk about the part of the word that needs to be remembered “by heart.”

4. Read the Sentences

Ask your child to read each sentence aloud. Encourage them to reread the sentences smoothly. You may also read a sentence aloud and ask your child to write it.

5. Practise the Weekly Spelling Words

Say each spelling word aloud and ask your child to spell and write it. Practising a few words each day is more helpful than trying to memorize the entire list at once.

Thank you for supporting your child’s learning at home!

This week, we also continued working on following classroom routines and expectations. Through our Be Good People program, our focus was Following Instructions. We discussed why careful listening and following directions are important for helping everyone learn and keeping our classroom running smoothly.

In Math, we reviewed repeating patterns and practised using patterning vocabulary, including attribute and core. Students identified, described, extended, and created patterns using different attributes such as colour, shape, size, and direction.

Community Walks in PE

Starting Wednesday, September 16th, we will be introducing a regular community walk routine as part of our PE classes. These walks will provide students with an opportunity to be active, get outside, and enjoy our school community.
Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather on walk days. Parents will be notified at least 48 hours in advance whenever a community walk is planned.
If you are interested in volunteering to help with community walks, please note that an updated police clearance is required every year. Our Parent Council Volunteer Coordinator has sent out a Sign-Up Genius for those interested in volunteering.
