Week of May 10-14

From the Classroom

First, my apologies that there was no classroom blog update posted last week. Unfortunately, the post did not update properly and I only just noticed the issue. Thank you for your understanding!

Over the past two weeks, students have continued building important literacy, numeracy, inquiry, and wellness skills through a variety of engaging learning experiences connected to the Alberta curriculum.

In literacy, students continued reviewing heart words, letter teams, and spelling patterns while applying this understanding during both reading and writing activities. Our focus has been on strengthening decoding skills, recognizing familiar word patterns, and using sounding-out strategies when reading unfamiliar words. Students have also been encouraged to apply these strategies independently during daily reading and writing tasks to build confidence and fluency.

In math, students have been working on fact families to deepen their understanding of number relationships and develop flexible thinking with numbers. We have also been practicing estimation strategies using engaging Steve Wyborney Esti-Mysteries, which encourage students to think critically, make reasonable estimates, explain their thinking, and develop number sense in meaningful ways.

As part of our preparation for our upcoming zoo field trip, we have also been exploring animals through our daily “Animal of the Day” inquiry activity. Each day, students learn about a different zoo animal by viewing information, discussing important facts, and asking questions about habitats, diets, behaviours, and unique characteristics. This work supports both literacy and science outcomes while helping students build curiosity and inquiry skills. In the coming weeks, students will choose one zoo animal to research further prior to our visit.

As always, we continue to work on collaboration, respectful communication, problem solving, and classroom routines throughout all areas of learning.

Thank you for your continued support at home! We are looking forward to many exciting learning opportunities ahead as we prepare for our zoo trip together.
