Our spelling test next week will take place on Tuesday. In phonics, students explored two sounds represented by ear, as in early and clear. We also wrapped up our work with bossy-r spelling patterns.
Math
We listened to One Grain of Rice and explored doubling patterns, discussing how quantities grow when we double them. We continued developing number sense by identifying even and odd numbers and counting by 3s and 5s using even and odd starting numbers. Students practised addition and subtraction within 30 through word problems. Our ongoing Esti-Mystery activities also gave us opportunities to strengthen estimation and mental math skills and explain our thinking. Work on 2-D and 3-D shape was incorporated into our science building activity when students were asked to identify and name shapes used in their build.
Science
Students completed their Thanksgiving learning challenge by creating an object for an imagined Thanksgiving gathering. They selected, identified, and combined materials to bring their ideas to life, considering how different materials could work together.
Social Studies
We followed the travels of Violet, Daisy and Lily’s older sister, as she journeyed with her family from CFB Edmonton on Treaty 6 lands toward Mohkinstsis, the traditional Blackfoot name for the area known today as Calgary.
Along the way, students explored land features between Edmonton and Calgary and discussed why these places have been important to people in the past and continue to be important today.
Information Items
Pumpkins and Building Materials Needed
We are looking for 5–6 pumpkins for a pumpkin investigation over the next two weeks. If you can donate a pumpkin, please email me at lacarter@cbe.ab.ca. Pumpkins can be sent to school next week. Thank you for supporting our classroom learning!
We would also appreciate more materials as we begin a large collaborative classroom building project. Useful donations include cardboard, medium-sized boxes, plastic or paper cups, paper hats, and other clean, reusable building materials. No glass, please.
HALLOWEEN at MTS
MTS will be celebrating Halloween on Thursday, October 29.
A reminder to all participants to please leave any weapons or gory accessories that may go with your costume at home. Costumes must be non-violent in nature (no guns, swords, fake blood). If a mask is part of their Halloween costume, we ask that students not wear the mask at school as it may be disruptive to student learning.
Please do not send any treats with your child to share due to allergies and other medical concerns.
Students will be participating in classroom-based Halloween themed learning activities that are sure to be fun and engaging.
