Week Ending Sept. 26th  From the Classroom Literacy- This week we introduced our new heart words : an and a . We also reviewed last week’s words to make sure they feel familiar and automatic. In phonics, we practiced identifying and making the sounds for s, t, p, and m , along with some fun activities that helped us review our vowels . Students are beginning to notice how these sounds come together to make words, and many are eager to show what they can read and write! Math- In math, we explored numeracy through counting in different ways. We practiced counting by 1s, 2s, and 5s using a hundreds chart , with chants and using songs. We also worked with AB and ABC repeating patterns , creating colourful sequences with shapes, sounds, and even actions. Science & Social Studies- In science, we observed the signs of fall —cooler weather, colourful leaves, and animals preparing for winter (we viewed the bears from Brooks Falls as well as Grouse Mountain via webcam). Week Ending September 19th From the Classroom This week our Grade 1s were busy exploring big ideas across math, literacy, and science! Math We focused on building number sense to 100. Students practiced: Identifying the greater number in a   pair of numbers . Working with number sequences to 100. Counting forward and backward by 1s all the way to 100. Skip counting by 2s on a hundreds chart. Literacy Our first heart words (“the” and “I”) were introduced, and we practiced using them in reading and writing. We also: Reviewed letter recognition and practiced the sounds for m, s, and t . Brainstormed words that begin with these letters. Continued to strengthen our understanding of vowels , finding and identifying them in written words. Science We read the book Let it Fall and talked about the many signs of autumn. Together, we noticed: Leaves changing colors 🍂 Animals preparing to hibernate 🐻 Cooler temperatures and how these show the season is ...
Week Ending September 13th  From the Classroom We’ve had a busy and exciting week of learning in Grade 1! Here are a few highlights from our classroom: Literacy This week we explored word machine activities on Starfall, which helped us practice sounding out simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. We also focused on the vowels o and u in both our reading and writing, while continuing to build our letter-sound knowledge. Math In Math, we began introductory work with patterns and shapes . We also practiced counting to 100 by 1s and to 30 by 2s — using rhythm and song to make it fun and engaging! Social Studies We had a thoughtful discussion about the upcoming Terry Fox Run . Students learned about Terry’s incredible courage, and we connected this to the Grandfather Teaching of Courage , talking about what it means to be brave in our own lives. Week Ending Sept. 5th From the Classroom This week we focused on settling into our routines and getting comfortable with our classroom and our school. We practiced expectations for how we work together, move through our spaces, and take care of one another. In literacy , we worked on letter and sound recognition, paying special attention to the vowels. We also began to notice how letters come together to form words, which will help us as readers and writers this year. In math , we practiced counting and started using chants to help us count all the way to 100. We also learned a new math word: when two objects match, they make a pair . In social studies , we talked about the importance of belonging and community — what it means to be part of our classroom family and how we each bring something special to our group. In science , we checked in on the Grouse Mountain bear camera and saw the grizzly bears we’ll be learning more about this year. The students were very excited to see them for...
