Week Ending September 13th 

From the Classroom

We’ve had a busy and exciting week of learning in Grade 1! Here are a few highlights from our classroom:

Literacy
This week we explored word machine activities on Starfall, which helped us practice sounding out simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. We also focused on the vowels o and u in both our reading and writing, while continuing to build our letter-sound knowledge.

Math
In Math, we began introductory work with patterns and shapes. We also practiced counting to 100 by 1s and to 30 by 2s — using rhythm and song to make it fun and engaging!

Social Studies
We had a thoughtful discussion about the upcoming Terry Fox Run. Students learned about Terry’s incredible courage, and we connected this to the Grandfather Teaching of Courage, talking about what it means to be brave in our own lives.

Science
In Science, we explored the signs of seasonal change. Students observed what’s happening outside and shared their ideas about how we know fall is on the way.

Information Items

Orange Shirt Day 

During the week of September 22-26, students will spend time reflecting on the meaning of Orange Shirt Day. On Friday September 26, staff and students are encouraged to wear thier Orange Shirts. Classroom activities throughout the week will include age-appropriate activities related to Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural significance.

Tuesday, September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. All CBE schools will be closed.

Change of Clothes

A number of students have been needing a change of clothes throughout the day. Please make sure to pack an extra pair of pants in your child's backpack. If any families have small pants that they need to donate, the office would be happy to take them.

Fun Lunch

Fun Lunch will start on Wednesday September 24. You will have until September 19th to register for the first lunch.

Fun Lunch is only for grades 1-4 and our EES students. 

  • Go to healthyhunger.ca
  • Log into you existing account or create a new one.
  • Add your child’s information in the “add child” box – name, province, city, school, grade and class.
  • All Fun Lunches will then populate – select the order now button!

Please make sure to send a morning snack with your child on Fun Lunch Days.

To have a successful Fun Lunch, we require 6 volunteers to support our Lunchroom Team.

Volunteers would be at the school from 11:30am - 12:30pm.

Week Ending Sept. 5th From the Classroom This week we focused on settling into our routines and getting comfortable with our classroom and our school. Week Ending September 19th From the Classroom This week our Grade 1s were busy exploring big ideas across math, literacy, and science! Math We focused on building number sense to 100. Students practiced: Identifying the greater number in a   pair of numbers . Working with number sequences to 100. Counting forward and backward by 1s all the way to 100. Skip counting by 2s on a hundreds chart. Literacy Our first heart words (“the” and “I”) were introduced, and we practiced using them in reading and writing. We also: Reviewed letter recognition and practiced the sounds for m, s, and t . Brainstormed words that begin with these letters. Continued to strengthen our understanding of vowels , finding and identifying them in written words. Science We read the book Let it Fall and talked about the many signs of autumn.
