Week Ending Sept. 26th
From the Classroom
Literacy-This week we introduced our new heart words: an and a. We also reviewed last week’s words to make sure they feel familiar and automatic. In phonics, we practiced identifying and making the sounds for s, t, p, and m, along with some fun activities that helped us review our vowels. Students are beginning to notice how these sounds come together to make words, and many are eager to show what they can read and write!
Math-In math, we explored numeracy through counting in different ways. We practiced counting by 1s, 2s, and 5s using a hundreds chart, with chants and using songs. We also worked with AB and ABC repeating patterns, creating colourful sequences with shapes, sounds, and even actions.
Science & Social Studies- In science, we observed the signs of fall—cooler weather, colourful leaves, and animals preparing for winter (we viewed the bears from Brooks Falls as well as Grouse Mountain via webcam). We connected our learning to seasonal celebrations with a focus on the Fall Equinox, Orange Shirt Day, and the National Day for Truth and Reconcilliation. We reflected on concepts related to belonging, rights, and responsibilities in our classroom. Students shared what helps them feel included and safe, and we discussed how we all have the right to kindness and respect, and the responsibility to care for each other and our classroom space.
