Week Ending September 19th

From the Classroom

This week our Grade 1s were busy exploring big ideas across math, literacy, and science!

Math
We focused on building number sense to 100. Students practiced:

  • Identifying the greater number in a  pair of numbers.

  • Working with number sequences to 100.

  • Counting forward and backward by 1s all the way to 100.

  • Skip counting by 2s on a hundreds chart.

Literacy
Our first heart words (“the” and “I”) were introduced, and we practiced using them in reading and writing. We also:

  • Reviewed letter recognition and practiced the sounds for m, s, and t.

  • Brainstormed words that begin with these letters.

  • Continued to strengthen our understanding of vowels, finding and identifying them in written words.

Science
We read the book Let it Fall and talked about the many signs of autumn. Together, we noticed:

  • Leaves changing colors 🍂

  • Animals preparing to hibernate 🐻

  • Cooler temperatures and how these show the season is changing.

Social Studies
We continued to work on building relationships with peers in our classroom as well as within our school learning community. We talked about relationships and how to show kindness after reading the book Lucy and the Bully.

It has been a wonderful week of learning, exploring, and noticing changes in both our classroom and the world around us.
