Week Ending November 7th
From the Classroom
Math
This week, students continued to build their confidence with numbers by exploring multiple ways of counting:
-
Counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s to 100
-
Using number lines as a tool for counting and problem solving
-
Exploring symmetry
Literacy
In literacy, we continued working with heart words — words we need to know “by heart.”
Our new heart words this week were:
➡️ to
➡️ you
➡️ we
We also reviewed letter sounds and formation, and students are very proud to know that we have now learned all but five letters of the alphabet! After Fall Break, we will wrap up individual letter/letter sound focus and begin shifting toward blending sounds and learning about letter "teams".
Science
We continued our exploration of seasonal changes, focusing specifically on the weather in fall — including the snow we experienced during class time on Friday! Students observed how weather changes affect animals, plants, and people. Lots of excitement about the snow!
Remembrance Day Learning
This week was filled with meaningful conversations as we prepared for Remembrance Day and Thursday's Remembrance Day Assembly. .We listened to several stories including A Poppy is to Remember and learned about courage, peace, and gratitude. We focused on three very special (and surprising!) soldiers:
-
Cher Ami — a heroic pigeon from WWI
-
Sergeant Reckless — a brave horse that served in the Korean Conflict
-
Layka — a military dog who served in Afghanistan
Students were engaged in viewing images of each of these animals and showed interest in knowing how animals have supported soldiers and saved lives. We had thoughtful discussions about bravery, kindness, and peace.
