Blog week of February 16th

From the Classroom

This week in Literacy, students continued to strengthen their reading and word-work skills by reviewing and identifying rhyming words and exploring word families. We were also introduced to the digraph “th” through direct instruction and guided practice, helping students recognize and use this sound in their reading and writing. Alongside this, we reviewed our heart words “they” and “the,” building confidence with high-frequency words that support reading fluency and comprehension. No new heart words were introduced this week.

In Math, students continued to deepen their number sense by practicing number sequencing and using tally marks to collect and organize information during a class vote. Students worked with number lines and explored multiple ways of counting, including counting by 5s, by 10s, and backwards from 100. We also continued developing early writing skills by practicing how to write number words from one to ten. These activities helped reinforce both accuracy and flexibility in mathematical thinking.

Our Social Studies and Science learning was sparked by a special classroom surprise: a visit from the Gingerbread Man, who shared that he had adopted a grizzly bear on behalf of our class! This exciting moment led to rich conversations about wildlife, caring for living things, and our connection to the land. As part of this experience, students learned that the Treaty 7 area is home to many Indigenous Nations and languages. We explored three possible bear names connected to these languages — Maskwa, Mató, and Awa. Using tally marks and careful counting, students voted to choose a name for our class grizzly, practicing both respectful decision-making and mathematical skills. Our grizzly is now proudly named Awa.

To celebrate our new class grizzly, students also created grizzly symmetry artwork, using mirror-image shapes and patterns to design balanced and expressive bears. This creative project encouraged careful observation, fine motor skills, and artistic expression. Throughout the week, students demonstrated curiosity, collaboration, and enthusiasm as they connected learning across subjects in meaningful ways. We are very proud of the thoughtful work and growing confidence we see each day in our classroom.
