Week of March 30th-April 2nd
From the Classroom
This week was full of meaningful learning across all subject areas, with students continuing to build both skills and confidence in their work.
Literacy
In our word work, we focused on letter teams -wor, -ed, and -ing, helping students recognize common patterns in words. We also worked with Column F of our heart word chart, continuing to build our bank of high-frequency words. Once all of the words in the chart have been introduced, we will begin revisiting the more challenging words regularly for ongoing review and consolidation.
Students also continued to grow as writers! We have continued working on three-sentence stories, and used a variety of “roll-a-story” mats to support idea generation and structure. A story mat from this week has been included below for optional at home practice. It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident in expressing their ideas in writing.
Math
Using the story Elevator Magic as our focus text, we introduced subtraction this week. Students explored this concept in a variety of hands-on ways, including:
- Jumping backwards on a hopscotch mat
- Using number lines to solve subtraction problems
- Writing and solving their own subtraction sentences
These experiences helped students understand subtraction as “taking away” and “moving backwards,” building a strong foundation for future learning.
Science
With Earth Day approaching, we began conversations about caring for our environment. Students also started preparing for our upcoming Celebration of Learning by practicing a choral reading retelling of the story Please Please the Bees.
Your child has brought home a short paragraph that they will be reading as part of this performance. This can be practiced at home (if possible) and does not need to be returned, as we have copies available for in-class practice as well.
Social Studies
We continued our discussions about life in the past and present, helping students make connections between how people lived long ago and how we live today. We also began preparing for our upcoming field trip to The Confluence, building background knowledge and excitement for this special learning experience.
