Week of April 27-May 1

Information From the Classroom

This week in Grade 1, students continued building their literacy skills through ongoing work with letter teams and heart word review. As students become more confident recognizing spelling patterns and high-frequency words, they are beginning to apply this understanding more independently during both reading and writing activities. Throughout the week, students participated in independent reading, choral reading, and collaborative shared reading activities with classmates. It has been wonderful to see students growing not only in their reading confidence, but also in their ability to work together and support one another as readers.

We also connected our literacy learning to science in a very meaningful way! Over the course of the week, students carefully observed the prairie dogs outside our classroom window and recorded their observations in the form of “field notes.” Students practiced looking closely, noticing details, and writing like young scientists as they described prairie dog behaviour, movement, sounds, and interactions. This activity encouraged curiosity, observation skills, and descriptive writing while helping students make real-world connections between literacy and science learning.

In Math, we continued working with Steve Wyborney’s Esti-Mysteries to help strengthen students’ number sense, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Students practiced making reasonable estimates, defending their thinking, and adjusting their ideas as new clues were revealed. We also continued exploring place value through a variety of interactive activities designed to help students better understand tens and ones. Hands-on learning opportunities encouraged students to build, represent, and discuss numbers in different ways as they deepen their understanding of our base-ten number system.

In Science, we discussed seasonal change and the many ways we are noticing spring arriving around us. Students shared observations about changes in the weather, temperature, plants, and animals, including the increased activity of the prairie dogs outside our classroom. These ongoing discussions are helping students recognize patterns in nature and understand how living things respond to changing seasons.

Toys at School- NO! This is a reminder that students are to leave their toys at home, including Pokeman cards and stuffies. Toys are a distraction in the classroom where the focus is on learning. As well, toys can get lost , misplaced, or fall into someone else’s hands. The school is not responsible for dealing with such issues or replacement of articles gone missing.
