Week of May 19-22
From the Classroom
It has been another busy week in our classroom!
In Literacy, we continued building confidence with heart word, spelling pattern, and letter team review during daily phonics instruction. Students have been applying their understanding of heart words and spelling patterns during independent, shared, and choral reading and writing tasks.
We have also been focusing on story writing through some very imaginative adventures featuring Daisy and Lily — two curious black Labs! Students have been creating and sharing stories about Daisy and Lily’s adventures in baking, on the farm, and even space travel! Ask your child to tell you about Daisy and Lily and some of their adventures — there have been many creative ideas and lots of wonderful shared storytelling based on these characters!
In Math, students have continued working on fact families, number sense, and solving a variety of problem-solving tasks. We have also explored estimation activities together and practiced explaining our mathematical thinking.
In Science and Inquiry learning, we have continued preparing for our upcoming zoo visit and individual animal research projects (to be completed in June) through our “Animal of the Day” activities. So far, polar bears, penguins, and monkeys have been our focus, and we have learned many interesting facts about these animals in advance of our trip.
Through classroom discussions, storytelling, and daily interactions, we have also been exploring the importance of respect, responsibility, and understanding how our actions can impact others. As part of this learning, students created individual classroom contracts highlighting ways they can show respect and contribute to a caring classroom environment. These activities support foundational Wellness and Social Studies learning outcomes connected to relationship building, community, and personal responsibility.
Daily wellness activities continue to be an important part of our classroom routine. Students participate in movement, mindfulness, and community-building activities designed to support self-regulation, focus, emotional awareness, and positive classroom interactions throughout the school day.
As always, thank you for your continued support at home.
