They have worked to further strengthen decoding, comprehension, and fluency skills, and have explored components of story, including beginning, middle and end. Students have strived to spell common words more accurately and to sound out more challenging words by applying strategies learned in class (what we refer to as Heart Words). They have continued to experiment with sentence structure, adding some punctuation and capital letters, as required.

They explored the needs of plants and animals and observed signs of seasonal change in spring and summer. Through outdoor learning, planting activities, and caring for living things, students developed an understanding of how all living things meet their basic needs in different environments. They also explored how materials can be used for building, testing designs using various tools and fasteners — including the creation of imaginative leprechaun traps! Our trip to the Calgary Zoo deepened our learning about animal classification and adaptations. Throughout, students practiced asking questions, making predictions, and recording observations — becoming curious, thoughtful young scientists.

HEALTH

Healthy choices related to nutrition and exercise, getting along with peers (belonging), and personal safety (sun, pedestrian, strangers) were all covered.  Discussions around financial literacy and the purpose of money, along with identifying Canadian coins and bills were a part of our learning.
