Week of June 8-12
From the Classroom
This week we've been busy reviewing and celebrating all of the learning we have done throughout the year!
In literacy, we have been revisiting vowel teams and other spelling patterns that help us become stronger readers and writers. We have also been reviewing our Heart Words and practicing using them correctly in our daily writing. Students continue to enjoy writing adventures featuring Daisy and Lily while working to add details, use complete sentences, and apply the spelling patterns they know.
In mathematics, we have been reviewing addition and subtraction within 20, number sequencing, and problem-solving strategies. Students have been practicing explaining their thinking, looking for clues in word problems, and using a variety of tools and strategies to find solutions.
In Science, students used tracings of their hands as measuring tools to investigate objects around the classroom. They searched for items that were larger than their hands, compared the sizes of different objects, and shared their observations with classmates. This hands-on investigation encouraged students to observe carefully, make comparisons, and think about how we can describe the world around us.
Students have also been continuing their animal research projects. After spending time learning about their chosen animals and gathering interesting facts, we are preparing to move into the next stage of our inquiry work: creating animal dioramas. Students will use their research to design and build a habitat that showcases their chosen animal and demonstrates their understanding of where it lives and how it survives in its environment. *We are still in need of shoe boxes/small boxes to create our dioramas and would appreciate families sending these items into the classroom if possible.
In Social Studies, we were fortunate to welcome Cst. Mike Kruger to our classroom. As we continue to learn about citizenship, community, and positive relationships, students participated in a discussion about being "bucket fillers" through acts of kindness, empathy, respect, and responsibility. Students reflected on how their choices and actions can impact others and explored ways they can contribute positively to our classroom, school, and community. We thank Cst. Kruger for taking the time to share these important messages with our students.
